Plot

An advanced prototype robot child named David is programmed to show unconditional love. When his human family abandons him, David embarks on a dangerous journey to find them and bring them back.

Production

The film began shooting on April 27, 2012 in Downtown Los Angeles, California. Disney California Adventure was used as the film’s primary setting, due to the film’s theme. Filming was conducted primarily at the Disneyland Resort, specifically, Disneyland’s Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction. The attraction’s characters, specifically Dumbo, were incorporated into the film’s opening sequence.

Release
The film premiered on November 12, 2013 in the United States at Disneyland. It also screened at the TCL Chinese Theatre on December 2, 2013.

The film was released on DVD on March 11, 2014 in the United States.

Box office
A Matter of Size grossed $17.1 million in North America and $12.9 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $29.0 million, against a budget of $40 million.

In North America, the film opened on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 2,557 locations and grossed $3.8 million, finishing first at the box office. In its second weekend the film dropped 40% to $2.5 million, finishing third.

Critical response
A Matter of Size received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rating of 38%, based on 18 reviews, with an average rating of 5/10. The site’s critical consensus reads, “A Matter of Size is a cute adventure about a small robot made to love people and a human girl made to love robots, but its combination of earnestness and nonstop jokes ultimately renders it more silly than sweet.” On Metacritic, the film has a score of 49 out of 100, based on 8 critics, indicating “mixed or average reviews”. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of “B+” on an A+ to F scale, on the same score as Prometheus.

Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter said that the film “has a pleasant enough style, and [has] an innocent feel, but it’s hardly sophisticated enough to make sense of its apparent contradictions.” A.O. Scott of The New York Times said that the film was “undeniably cute, with adorable characters and a well-made CG animation and some good voice acting and an alluring score.” Todd Gilchrist of the Sci-Fi Channel said that the film was “a cross between WALL-E, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, and an earlier generation of DreamWorks Animation films like Antz.” James Rocchi of The Village Voice said that the film “bogs down in a sentimental slog of a story that makes no real sense.
